Sweet Home Fulgurite
When ultra hot plasma in lighting touches silica (sand) it fuses the grains of sand into a dendritic formation leaving behind glass tubes called Fulgurites. Fulgurites contain very little glass and cannot be used for making glass art as mentioned in the movie “Sweet Home Alabama”.
The melted amorphous glass tubes are coated with the color of sand they were derived from. Sedona fulgurites are rich in iron giving them a more rusted reddish appearance, whereas Morocco fulgurites are lighter in color, Tampa Bay Florida has a nice white, near colorless fulgurite with good translucency.

Fulgurites are delicate to work with in jewelry making, so they are commonly wrapped with wire. Wire wrapping is a primitive technique used to hold the stone and is not used by the advanced artists using ancient advanced stone cutting technologies. (Below) A Lapis Lazuli disc, drilled with a star shaped hole in the center. The Fulgurite has 2 large round drill holes, inserted at the top with LED lights and powered by a 3-volt battery.
Pressing the Lapis disc allows the Fulgurite to light up internally and enables charging of the glow-in-the-dark luminescent epoxy.
Release the lapis light button and the fluorescent epoxy lights up in darker areas. Using the ancient stone cutting technique of ultrasonics allows delicate items like Fulgurites to be drilled without destroying the rock.
